A microchip is about the size of a grain of rice and is injected under your pet’s skin, usually on their back near the shoulders. The microchip is embedded with a code unique to your pet and is the most effective form of permanent identification. This code is placed onto a national computer database (except in NSW which have a state registry instead), so it is particularly useful in the return of lost pets. They can also assist where the ownership of an animal is in dispute.
Microchipping of pets is now compulsory in Victoria and purchased puppies and kittens should already be microchipped. It is important to ensure that the registration details are transferred into your name as soon as possible.
If your pet is not yet microchipped, this can be done during a normal consultation (you must have a Source Number - generally the owner of the litter will supply this to you or you must obtain one yourself from the Pet Exchange Register - go online to per.animalwelfare.vic.gov.au).
If you move address or change your contact details, make sure you update your pet’s entry on the pet registry.
